Pennsylvania continues fight against opioid epidemic

On January 10, 2018, Gov. Tom Wolf took what many saw as the dramatic step of issuing a statewide disaster declaration over the opioid epidemic currently gripping the commonwealth.

 

Since that time, Pennsylvania’s governmental entities—from the executive and legislative branches, all the way to local governments—are continuing to step up the fight against opioid abuse and overdose deaths.

Experts likely to play a role in redraw of PA congressional map

Assuming the US Supreme Court does not grant a stay of the Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court’s order for a mid-February redraw of Pennsylvania’s 2011 congressional map the latter court found unconstitutional last week, experts retained by both Gov. Tom Wolf and the state Supreme Court are likely to play some role in how a new map is crafted and found to be constitutional.

On Friday afternoon, Governor Tom Wolf and the Department of Environmental Protection held a press conference where they shared the findings from the administration's comprehensive review of the permitting processes throughout the department. 

The main goals are to reduce permit backlogs, modernize permitting activities through an electronic permitting initiative, and use technology to improve both oversight and efficiency.

Republican state legislative leaders file gerrymandering decision stay petition with US Supreme Court

Citing the lack of a final opinion from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Thursday, Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson) and Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) filed a petition with the US Supreme Court to stay the enforcement of the decision in League of Women Voters v. Commonwealth.
