Wagner-helmed Senate Local Government Committee approves bills punishing sanctuary cities, eliminating local paid sick leave ordinances

In the first meeting of the Senate Local Government Committee since Sen. Scott Wagner (R-York) took over as Majority Chairman, the committee voted along party lines to move to the full Senate for consideration a bill punishing so-called “sanctuary cities” and legislation that would eliminate local ordinances providing paid sick leave.

Auditor General slams payout to former PPA executive director

Auditor General Eugene DePasquale slammed a recent payout to former Philadelphia Parking Authority Executive Director Vincent Fenerty.

 

Fenerty stepped down in his post in September 2016 shortly before a likely vote by the PPA board to remove him from his position after allegations of sexual harassment on the part of Fenerty came to light earlier in the year.

Department of Health publishes temporary medical marijuana regulations for dispensaries

Eyeing full implementation of the medical marijuana program authorized under Act 16 of 2016, the Department of Health announced last week that temporary regulations covering medical marijuana dispensaries have been published in the Pennsylvania Bulletin.

 

“The dispensary temporary regulations outline what is needed in the plan for operation, process for dispensing medical marijuana, security and surveillance requirements at the dispensary, as well as where the dispensary facilities can be located,” said Secretary of Health Karen Murphy.

Mayor Kenney takes action to tackle opioid crisis in Philadelphia

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced this week his plans to form a task force that will focus on providing solutions to the opioid crisis in Philadelphia.

 

“The opioid epidemic has been taking lives, destroying families and undermining the quality of life of Philadelphians across the city said," the Mayor said in a statement. “This is a significant social and public health challenge requiring a comprehensive, citywide approach.”
