Pittsburgh Republican Remley faces, wins legal challenge to stay on District 8 ballot

Turning to two lawyers and an Allegheny County elections official in front of him Tuesday morning, Judge Joseph James chuckled from his seat. 

“The regular cast of characters,” James said. “What would an election be without the three of you?” 

James was hearing a legal challenge to Republican Rennick Remley’s candidacy in the District 8 city council special election, which the candidate won after a few hours of deliberations by the judge.

With the election four months away, both Democrats and Republicans already have candidates lined up for a Washington county special election in what could be a tough battle, as national attention focuses on southwestern Pennsylvania over the 18th Congressional special election.

Scheduled for May 15, the special election was scheduled after former 48th District representative Brandon Neuman resigned December 31 last year to take over as a Washington county judge.
