House, Senate GOP leaders react to budget planning meeting with governor

Tuesday marked the first time House and Senate GOP leaders met with the governor to begin initial talks about how to move forward this spring with the budget for the coming fiscal year.

Following the meeting, The PLS Reporter caught up with some of those leaders to find out what they have to say and where they feel the budget talks are heading.

Reed says property tax reform bill coming soon, provides budget update

House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana) held a late afternoon conference call with reporters to provide a budget update and give insight into the Spring/Summer legislative schedule of the House.

During the call, Rep. Reed told reporters that a bill to bring dollar-for-dollar reductions in school property taxes could be considered by the House in a matter of weeks.

Just under a week after Gov. Tom Wolf unveiled his budget proposal, The PLS Reporter caught up with House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana) to see how things have settled with him and his caucus.

While still seeing the numbers put out by the governor as “extreme,” Majority Leader Reed said he sees areas where his caucus can work with the governor.

On Wolf’s corporate tax proposal, Republican leaders agree the devil is in the details

Gov. Tom Wolf Wednesday announced some of his budget plans for the upcoming fiscal year, among them a substantial revision to Pennsylvania’s corporate tax laws, but Republican leaders say they need to see the specifics of the plan before casting any final judgment.

According to a news release form the Wolf administration, the governor proposed at an event in Bethlehem Wednesday cutting Pennsylvania’s corporate net income tax from the current rate of 9.99 percent to 4.99 percent over two years. He is also calling for a final phase-out of the Capital Stock and Franchise Tax and for combined reporting (also known as closing the Delaware Loophole).

Select subcommittee will examine career and technical education readiness

Select subcommittee will examine career and technical education readiness

A bipartisan group of House members including House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana) introduced a House Resolution that would form a select subcommittee of the House Education Committee to examine readiness surrounding career and technical education.

House Resolution 102 is scheduled to be considered by the House Education Committee on Wednesday.
