Republican legislative leaders send Gov. Wolf new congressional map

Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson) and Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) announced late Friday afternoon that they have agreed among themselves on a new congressional map that they later sent to Gov. Tom Wolf that evening.

 

“The Republican legislative leaders in the House and Senate have agreed to a Congressional District Map that complies fully with the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s order and opinion," read a joint statement from the two Republican legislative leaders.

 

"We will be submitting our map to the governor this evening.”

Legislators face short turnaround to meet redistricting timeline

Given the lost day to winter weather on Wednesday, when lawmakers return to session from their respective twelve-hour calls, they will face a short turnaround time to get a new congressional map to Gov. Tom Wolf in order to meet the Friday deadline laid out by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

 

If lawmakers fail to meet the deadline on Friday, the Court would then step in and—with the help of a specially-appointed Master—select a map they feel meets state constitutional muster.
