Capitol Quick Hits for 6.24.14

Here are the highlights from news conferences, rallies, and advocacy days held in the Capitol today:

  • Philadelphia City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson was joined by legislators and community leaders to rally against budget cuts to the city’s schools. “Each year we revisit our education funding structures, and we have yet to come up with a comprehensive solution," Councilman Johnson observed. “Gov. Corbett and the General Assembly have a legal responsibility to fund an education system that provides quality learning for students across the Commonwealth.”
  • The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT) gathered with members of the Philadelphia delegation for a rally this afternoon to urge lawmakers not to cut education funding.  Jerry Jordan, President of PFT, called on Gov. Tom Corbett and the General Assembly to make education the highest priority of the state budget and explained why additional funding is necessary in Philadelphia schools.
  • Auditor General Eugene DePasquale today released an interim report on its ongoing audit of the Department of Public Welfare, an auction he said was prompted by serious issues uncovered during the investigation. Among  the findings released by the Auditor General was evidence that an excess of $200,000 was provided to Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT/ACCESS) cards associated with Social Security numbers (SSNs) belonging to dead individuals.
