House lawmakers analyze effectiveness of job creation programs

House legislators discussed how to increase job creation Wednesday after Pennsylvania lost 10,000 jobs last year.


The House Appropriations Committee invited testifiers that represented the Department of Labor and Industry, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), and Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) to discuss the agencies’ various programs.


“We want to get rid of programs that don’t work and bolster the ones that do,” said Chairman Stan Saylor (R-York).

House lawmakers focus on severance tax and Pennsylvania's economic climate during IFO budget hearing

The House Appropriations Committee focused primarily on how to improve the economy and the impacts of Gov. Tom Wolf’s proposed severance tax on natural gas at the Independent Fiscal Office budget hearing Tuesday morning.


Legislators allowed IFO representatives to testify to discuss the implications of Gov. Wolf’s proposed budget and give an overall economic outlook.

House committee holds hearing on regulating municipal electric rates

The House Local Government Committee gathered Tuesday to evaluate the benefits and disadvantages of passing House Bill 1405.

 

HB 1405 has two main functions. It would not allow municipalities to transfer money from electric funds to general funds. It would also provide residents within municipalities that have electric service monopolies to have more protections so these residents would have choice. These protections would be similar to guidelines that the Public Utility Commission (PUC) abides by.
