This week in the top three events The PLS Reporter was joined by Department of Corrections Secretary, John Wetzel, to talk about recent turmoil in state prisons thought to be connected to synthetic drugs.

Also this week there were multiple public hearings and meetings including one about 
amending the older adults protective services act and another that looked into a bill that would bring state public sector union laws into line with the federal Janus ruling.

Department of Corrections continues holistic approach to opioid addiction

Among the many issues confronting the state Department of Corrections is what to do with the ongoing issue of Pennsylvania’s opioid addiction crisis and how affected inmates should be treated for their addiction-related issues.

 

According to Department of Correction Sec. John Wetzel, the department is taking a holistic approach to treating inmates that come into the state prison system with opioid-dependency issues by providing treatment so as to reduce addiction, but also reduce recidivism.

Gov. Tom Wolf announced Thursday that his administration is moving ahead entering into an inter-departmental memorandum of understanding (MOU) that would merge the parole agent functions of the Department of Corrections and Board of Probation and Parole.

As SCI Pittsburgh comes to a close, plans for development and prison closure reform ramp up

Things are quietly winding down as the state correctional institution in Pittsburgh gets ready to permanently close its doors on June 30th. 

 

As of May 19th, there are zero inmates in the facility that once housed 1,921 convicted individuals, and only a few employees remain to finish out the closure process. Those remaining employees will begin their new assignments at surrounding facilities on May 21, according to the Department of Corrections (DOC).
