Gov. Tom Wolf held a press conference Tuesday where he stated his intention to nominate Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller to be the Secretary of the proposed Department of Health and Human Services.

This proposed agency combines the Departments of Aging, Drug and Alcohol Programs, Health, and Human Services into one larger department.

Pittsburgh and state officials discuss possible implications of proposed Affordable Care Act repeal

As U.S. House members debate a vote to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act in Washington, Pennsylvania officials met in Pittsburgh Thursday to discuss the impact the move would have for state residents.

During a press conference at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller said that because of the ACA, 6.1 million Pennsylvanians benefit from access to free preventive care services, 5.4 million can’t be denied health insurance coverage because of a pre-existing condition, and 4.5 million are no longer subject to annual and lifetime limits that used to be placed on covered benefits.

Senators skeptical over proposed human services agency consolidation

In a situation unique to recent budget hearing history, four departments up for potential consolidation appeared jointly before the Senate Appropriations Committee Wednesday to answer questions about the proposed merger and various agency operations.

 

Normally appearing separately—as they did in the House—the agencies discussed the merits of the proposed consolidation and worked to assuage the fears of senators skeptical of the alleged benefits of the merger.
