Senators question the necessity of the state system of higher education

The majority of the Senate Appropriations Committee expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the state system of higher education during Thursday’s budget hearing.

Sen. Bob Mensch (R-Montgomery), Sen. Scott Wagner (R-York), Sen. John Eichelberger (R- Blair), and Sen. Randy Vulakovich (R-Allegheny) were the most vocal about their criticism.

The main issues, according to senators, are low enrollment and the system’s lack of self-sufficiency.
