Pittsburghers jam council chambers to express opposition to UPMC expansion plans

More than a hundred registered speakers took to Pittsburgh City Council chambers to voice their opinions, largely skeptical, of a $2 billion expansion of a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hospital — catching a few members' ears in the process.

UPMC, the multi-billion dollar health care and insurance enterprise, gained council’s approval in 2012 to expand its Mercy campus in Uptown — a rundown neighborhood sandwiched between downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland.

Pittsburgh City Council held a public hearing on a long talked about policy that requires landlords to register their property Wednesday.

Despite passing in 2015, the ordinance has not yet been enacted because of a legal challenge from a group of local landlords.

In adult hearing of Pittsburgh city council on burlesque, medical marijuana, child’s testimony shines

New medical marijuana laws and old zoning codes that classified crossdressing in the same vein as a strip club took center stage at two public Pittsburgh city council hearings Thursday afternoon. 

The former was held as a reaction to the opening of the city’s first two dispensaries since Pennsylvania legalized cannabis for medical purposes in 2016.
