Allegheny County DA election draws into focus broader community policing schism

When 17-year-old Antwon Rose Jr. was fatally shot by an East Pittsburgh police officer in June 2018, the nation’s conversation about policing became very personal for Allegheny County.

Around the state elected officials and advocates called for police reforms, but when looking at the system as a whole local activists wondered if District Attorney Stephen Zappala was capable of seeking justice on Rose’s behalf.

Former assistant Allegheny County DA, public defender to challenge Zappala in 2019

Former Allegheny County assistant district attorney and chief deputy public defender Turahn Jenkins is challenging incumbent DA Stephen Zappala for his seat in 2019.

The announcement comes on the heels of the death of Atwon Rose Jr. who while unarmed was shot in the back by an East Pittsburgh police office. While Zappala is seeking a murder charge against the officer, a history of poor police-community relations has led up to Jenkins' announcement.
