Pennsylvanians weigh in on climate change, marijuana and vaccines in new poll

A new statewide public health poll released Wednesday by the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion found that a majority of Pennsylvanians believe climate change is a major public health threat, a finding which comes as lawmakers in the General Assembly are juggling multiple renewable energy proposals while also hosting climate change skeptics at informational hearings in the Capitol.

House committee hears contrarian climate change viewpoint

House committee hears contrarian climate change viewpoint

Wednesday’s House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee meeting was marked by a unique guest — geologist and climate skeptic Gregory Wrightstone, who urged House lawmakers to look past a 97-percent scientific consensus and come to their own science-based conclusions on the climate change debate.

Wrightstone was invited by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler), chairman of the committee, to offer a contrarian viewpoint to the greater climate change discussion. An author and a former consultant for the natural gas industry, Wrightstone said the 97-percent consensus reached by actively publishing climate scientists has been “completely discredited” and made up of “lies and inaccuracies.”

Environmental advocates hold clean air rally to call for accountability

On the tepid first day of Spring, environmental advocates took to the city-county building stairs in Pittsburgh at Penn Environment’s second annual clean air rally to remind residents and elected officials alike that air quality often makes the city less than livable.

From its smoggy past to its unhealthy, air quality advisory-filled present, the Steel City has its share of air quality issues. Although over the past year the city and Allegheny County have seen progress, Zachary Barber, an organizer for PennEnvironment, reminded the modest crowd of thirty that Pittsburgh’s air quality is still among the worst in the nation.
