Marijuana partial decriminalization bill takes first steps as session draws to close

By a wide bipartisan margin, the House Judiciary Committee advanced today legislation cutting back on punishments for marijuana possession.

The bill, Rep. Barry Jozwiak’s (R-Berks) HB 928, limits the first two penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana to summary offenses with no jail time and a maximum $300 fine.

House remains torn on what to do to combat gun violence

House members discussed potential legislation that limits access to guns and there was no consensus during the fifth gun policy public hearing Tuesday. 

House Bill 1400, the background check bill and House Bill 194, legislation that would ban assault weapons, got the most criticism from Rep. Rick Saccone (R- Allegheny) and Rep. Barry Jozwiak (R-Berks).
