Rep. Tim Briggs (D-Montgomery) has been named the new minority chair of the House Health Committee.

The position was left vacant following the death of former chairman Flo Fabrizio last month.

House Health approves two welfare reform measures, including work requirements for public medical insurance

Another day, another ideological slugfest over a platform issue in an election year.

The House Health committee approved two bills, both reforming the state’s welfare system, Tuesday afternoon after more than two hours of debate among representatives. The votes also came a day after a partisan debate on Speaker of the House Mike Turzai's (R-Allegheny) bill to ban justifying an abortion with the diagnosis of Down Syndrome.

Down Syndrome abortion ban passes House Health committee

By a 17-9 vote, the House Health Committee advanced a bill to the House floor Monday that would ban abortion solely because of a Down Syndrome diagnosis.

The vote fell nearly along party lines except for Rep. Gerard Mullery (D-Luzerne) joining Republicans voting in the affirmative.
