Amid the crunch of budget negotiations, the General Assembly was busy passing dozens of bills beyond the state’s $33.9 billion spending plan. Gov. Tom Wolf signed a number of them in recent days to much fanfare, but many others have flown under the radar. We took some time to profile five of the most interesting laws that came out of budget season.

Senate GOP sends blistering letter to Fetterman, says he ‘scarred the institution’ during General Assistance dispute

The entirety of the Pennsylvania Senate Republican Caucus sent a letter to Lt. Gov. John Fetterman on Tuesday excoriating the lieutenant governor for allowing a Democratic senator to speak on the floor against Senate rules in the midst of a heated debate on ending a cash assistance program for the poor.

 

The letter, signed by all 28 Republican senators, accused Fetterman of scarring the institution when he allowed Sen. Katie Muth (D-Montgomery) to read a letter from a constituent as Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman was calling for a point of order.

The budget deadline of June 30th has been inching closer this week, and as of Friday morning the budget and all of its code bills have passed both chambers are headed to the Governor's desk. 

Also this week chaos broke out on the Senate floor over the General Assistance bill causing the Senate Democrats to leave the floor. 

And lastly, legislators did a toast to 13 agricultural and farm related bills passing and being sent out for a signature from Governor Tom Wolf.

Let’s get fiscal: 4 highlights from the 2019-2020 Fiscal Code bill

A wide-ranging Fiscal Code bill was sent to Gov. Tom Wolf’s desk Thursday, bringing the 2019-2020 budget one step closer to enactment.

The legislation, which helps outline specifics of the annual spending plan, passed the House and the Senate on Thursday, setting in place procedures that could affect environmental policy, energy costs, and the state’s preparedness for emergencies.

Lawmakers share milkshake "cheers" for the passage of 13 AG bills

A bipartisan group of lawmakers from the House and Senate joined in the Rotunda to have a Pennsylvania Farm Show milkshake "cheers" to a package of 13 agricultural bills aimed at helping support Pennsylvania's farmers.

Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman (R-Centre) kicked off the press conference and highlighted what the legislature has done to help push these bills forward.
