Brown, Kavulich seats to be filled in special elections on March 12

Two special elections will take place in Philadelphia and Lackawanna counties March 12 to fill the House’s two vacant seats.

Since Oct. 16, when former Rep. Sid Michaels Kavulich (D-Lackawanna) passed away, and Dec. 11, when Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown (D-Philadelphia) resigned following her bribery conviction, the seats have been empty.

Following wave of vacancies, House GOP chairmanships face shake up

Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Franklin) was named new chief of the powerful House Judiciary Committee while Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) will take over the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, two of the many shuffles needed to cover nine openings from retirements and electoral defeats in caucus committee leadership.

Kauffman had previously been chair of the House Labor and Industry Committee, while Metcalfe chaired State Government.

Turzai, Scarnati hold top positions as members sworn in on New Year's

The 228 members of the House and Senate who stood for election in November were sworn into office New Year's Day.

Altogether, 50 new members of the General Assembly, including 43 representatives and seven senators, were sworn in, or nearly 20 percent of the total number of lawmakers.

Wolf creates commission to study redistricting, drawings cries of grandstanding from legislative Republicans

With the wave of his pen, Gov. Tom Wolf stirred up the redistricting debate again in Pennsylvania, dormant since a last minute push to pass a constitutional amendment to create an independent commission failed.

By executive order, Wolf Thursday created the Pennsylvania Redistricting Reform Commission, which, while it will have no official authority to draw new legislative lines, will conduct a fact-finding mission across the commonwealth to provide suggestions for a new system to draw the state’s legislative and congressional boundaries.

Turzai faces Skopov, Williams battles Shaffer at candidate forum

Two sets of candidates in top-tier state races traded blows Thursday night at a forum in the northern Pittsburgh suburbs.

For the 38th Senate District, Democratic candidate Lindsey Williams and Republican Jeremy Shaffer debated for the first half, while in the 28th House District, Speaker of the House Mike Turzai faced off with challenger Emily Skopov on questions around gun control, redistricting and education spending.
