House GOP sends budget-funding plan to Senate

House Republicans on Wednesday passed what they entitled “The Putting People First Budget,” a budget-balancing plan that provides $2.3 billion in funding to close the $2.2 billion accumulated budget deficit facing the Commonwealth in FY 2017-2018, by a vote of 103 to 91.

Senate Bill 1 clears House, heads to governor

It was a year ago this week that Gov. Tom Wolf signed major alcohol sales reform legislation, and this week the legislature sent him the largest public pension reform legislation Pennsylvania has seen in decades.

 

After years of work, debate, and emotion, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives put the final votes to Senate Bill 1, passing the measure by a vote of 143-52 Thursday morning.

House Education approves bills to provide CTE graduation flexibility and increase funding for EITC/OSTC

Meeting for the first time Monday for the 2017-2018 legislative session and under the helm of new Majority Chairman Dave Hickernell (R-Lancaster), the House Education Committee took up a number of bills, including one that would provide graduation flexibility for career and technical education (CTE) students and another increasing the limit for the Education Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC).

 

Both bills are sponsored by Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny).

Northeast PA lawmakers celebrate avoiding three potential state prison closures, but their future remains murky

Northeastern Pennsylvania lawmakers were rejoicing Thursday over the fact that all three of the region’s state prisons that were slated for potential closure will remain open.

 

The three that might have closed were SCI Waymart, SCI Retreat, and SCI Frackville.
