In lieu of budget controversies this week, the Pennsylvania legislature instead managed to find itself in a showdown over the state's official amphibian. A Senate resolution giving the honor to the Eastern Hellbender passed early in the week, but on Thursday House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana) introduced his own resolution naming Wehrle's salamander the state amphibian.

Cumberland County DA David Freed, who ran unsuccessfully for state Attorney General in 2012, this week was confirmed as US attorney for Pennsylvania's Middle District. Freed was nominated by President Trump for the post in September.

Former governor and DHS secretary Tom Ridge suffered a heart attack Thursday in Texas. Gov. Ridge remains in "critically stable condition" as of Friday morning and his wife has released a statement telling well-wishers, "It's going to be day-to-day." The former governor remains in hospital at Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas.
