PA Supreme Court holds municipal, county share casino assessment unconstitutional

In an opinion issued Wednesday afternoon, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in a divided panel found the local and county share assessments placed on casinos as unconstitutional. The court deemed the assessments violative of the uniformity clause.

Gov. Wolf addresses joint session of the General Assembly on opioid crisis, but more work remains

Gov. Tom Wolf addressed a joint session of the General Assembly Wednesday morning in an effort to spur on legislative action to fight the opioid crisis facing Pennsylvania.

 

According to the governor, while the legislature and administration have already taken steps to help doctors, law enforcement, and the corrections system deal with the opioid epidemic, more work remains to be done.

Former steel mill site in Pittsburgh one step closer to restart on tax break

Allegheny County Council met Tuesday evening to vote on a measure to push back the start time of a tax incentive for the redevelopment of a former steel mill site in south Pittsburgh. 

The Almono project- a name that stems from Pittsburgh’s three rivers, the Allegheny, Monongahela, and the Ohio- is a 178 acre former LTV steel mill site along the riverfront in Hazelwood that a group of southwestern foundations and developer Regional Industrial Development Corp. (RIDC) plan on turning into a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial developments with a focus on sustainability.

Libre's Law rally attracts multiple supporters

Sen. Richard Alloway (R-Franklin) walked down the Capitol steps with the famous Libre, a dog who survived extreme physical cruelty, before joining advocates and pet owners for the rally for Libre's Law Wednesday afternoon. 

Libre's Law is a proposal by Sen. Alloway currently under consideration in the legislature that would increase penalties for those convicted of animal cruelty.
